Vipers win overtime thriller for first victory of season

Fans attended a Vernon Vipers regular season game at Kal Tire Place for the first time in about 600 days — and it was worth the wait.

Cameron MacDonald scored 22 seconds into overtime for a 4-3 win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Saturday night.

A crowd of 1,500 took in the game which was a sell-out, given the 50 per cent capacity limit by the provincial health officer under COVID-19 guidelines, and everyone who attended had to show proof of vaccination.

MacDonald added an assist and was named the game’s first star. Luke Buss, Ryan Shostak and Reagan Milburn also scored for Vernon who got their first win in three BCHL starts.

Simon Tassy had a goal and one assist for the Silverbacks, a night after leading his team to a 4-2 win over Vernon with a hat trick at the Shaw Centre.

It was the Vipers BCHL home opener and local firefighters were honoured during the pre-game ceremony for their efforts to battle summer wildfires.
