Federal election Sept. 20

UPDATE: Five person race in North Okanagan-Shuswap, forum on Sept. 8

Aug 16, 2021 | 1:00 PM

The Conservative MP for the North Okanagan-Shuswap will be up against at least three challengers in the Sept. 20 federal election, which was called on Sunday.

Mel Arnold will be seeking his third term after winning in a landslide over the Liberal candidate in 2019, garnering 48 per cent of the votes.

The other declared candidates so far are Kyle Delfing of the People’s Party (update), Shelley Desautels of the Liberals, Andrea Gunner of the Green Party and Ron Johnston of the New Democratic Party.

There will be several ways to vote other than showing up at a polling station on Sept. 20, including voting by mail and advance polling. Click here for more on that from Elections Canada.

The Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce will host an all-candidates forum via Zoom Sept. 8 at 6 p.m., and the candidates for North Okanagan-Shuswap have been invited to attend.

“Given the condensed timeline for this campaign, it is essential that local voters have an opportunity to hear from the candidates as well as having a chance to ask questions of the candidates directly,” said Dan Proulx, Greater Vernon Chamber general manager. “The Chamber membership reflects the greater community – businesses and non-profits – and what happens at the federal level is extremely important, whether it’s Covid recovery, the labour shortage or taxation. We encourage all residents to review the policy platforms of each candidate and to make an informed choice.”

Details on registration for the forum will be made available soon.
