24-hour disc golf marathon for charity

Roland Peltier is going to find out just how much he loves playing disc golf.

The Lumby resident will team up with Rocky LaVonne Gould of Naramata to play disc golf for 24 hours straight at the Lumby Golf Club this coming weekend, raising money for the White Valley Community Resource Centre and Lumby Disc Golf.

The marathon will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 10, and end at 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 11.

“We’ll see how many rounds we can do in a 24 hour period. I’m aiming for ten, but it will get harder as we get more tired,” Peltier, 49, told Vernon Matters.

Disc golf is similar to regular golf, but participants throw plastic discs, and try to get them into chain baskets.

“It’s pretty popular right now,” said Peltier.

Peltier said the club built the disc course at the local golf club that has been around for some 70 years.

“We’ve raised the membership at the Lumby Golf Club, from like, $1,000 a year, to $5,000 a year, so they’re really happy with us. It’s really family-oriented and we’re really good ambassadors to the sport.”

Half the money raised will go to the White Valley Community Resource Centre, which provides free counseling and helps families in need, and the other half will be for buying proper tee pads for the golf course.

“At night, we’re going to have glow golf, so we’ll have lights on our baskets and discs and it will be like the movie Tron where you see the discs glowing,” Peltier laughed.

People can make donations to the event called ’24 hours of disc golf at the Foggy Basket’ (name of course) at the Lumby Disc Golf Facebook page, and can also purchase tickets for $5, or five tickets for $10 for a chance to win donated prizes.

Peltier said they have $1,500 in donated prizes already, including two tandem para gliding flights valued at $250 each from Freedom Flight Park to bring people on a flight over Lumby.

In addition to Freedom Flight Park, the sponsors so far are:
