Referendum date set for Active Living Centre

Voters will be asked to support an approximately $90 million dollar Active Living Centre with a referendum on the October 15, 2022 municipal election ballot.

The facility would be located on the former Kin Race Track land on 43rd Avenue, next to the Kal Tire Place complex.

The initial estimate is what is called a class ‘D’ estimate, which is plus or minus 25 per cent. An exact costing would be completed prior to the referendum.

Council had originally intended to have a referendum this September, but it was noted there is still additional planning work to be done, and a significant cost saving ($90,000 to $100,000) by holding it in conjunction with the municipal election.

The facility would include an eight-lane 50 metre pool, a steam sauna, hot tub, a three-lane warm-up pool and a leisure pool with a tot slide.

Also there would be a double gymnasium with a 150 metre walking/jogging track above, bleachers and viewing area for the swimming events, an 80-station fitness centre, and eight multi-purpose studios.

A geotechnical report on the site finds it is suitable to construct a building the size and scope of what has initially been planned.

“The active living centre building can be located anywhere at the site from a geotechnical perspective, as the in-situ clay ground conditions are similar across the site. However, the site preparation cost effectiveness favours the south side of the site; there is a larger volume of fill and topsoil removals, and imported structural fill and site grading materials needed on the north side,” Flecter Paine Associates Ltd. stated in a report on the property.
