Fee now aligns with Vernon

Coldstream council cooks up lower mobile food vendor fee

Coldstream council has voted to bring the fee charged to mobile food vendors in line with the City of Vernon.

The action was taken following a letter from Sabine and Olivier Petit of Petit Crepe Bistro Ltd.

“We want to draw your attention to one important point for us. The actual fees requested by the District of Coldstream are very high compared to the fees we are currently paying to lease a space at both farmers markets in Vernon and Kelowna,” Sabine Petit stated in a letter to council.

Coldstream had been charging $300 dollars per month, compared to Vernon at $300 a year.

“If we miss one or two days per month due to bad weather, the daily fee is very high,” Petit noted.

Staff were prepared to complete a report with recommendations on a fee structure, noting that fees vary widely across the Okanagan from $100 to $2000 a season.

“Save all the report time and everything else. I mean Vernon is our neighbour, people are doing business there, doing business here, we should be similar unless there are some good reasons to be different,” Coun. Doug Dirk said in support of a motion to have the same fee structure as Vernon.

Staff will bring back a bylaw amendment to make the change, and any vendors that have paid the $300 monthly fee will get credit for the entire season.

The couple set-up for the first time this season May 9 at Sovereign Park and Beach (7604 Block, Kidston Road) for Mother’s Day and plan to operate 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday through the end of September.
