Downtown street closure still up in the air

May 11, 2021 | 5:00 AM

A proposal to close two blocks of 30th Avenue on weekends for the spring and summer has been delayed two weeks.

Coun. Dalvir Nahal, who initially brought forward the idea, was not able to attend Monday’s council meeting in person, prompting a motion to defer the matter.

Members of council were downtown talking to various business owners about the idea.

Coun. Akbal Mund talked to just about all of the businesses in the two blocks, and found strong support in the 2900 block, but not in the 3000 block.

“There is a lot of misinformation. There is a lot of questions about a lot of things and I don’t know how we gather that information,” Mund said.

A motion by Coun. Brian Quiring, who is also the city representative on the Downtown Vernon Association, to ask the DVA when they could do a proper consultation was carried.

Mayor Victor Cumming felt the closure and consultation should be approached in a ‘systematic and professional manner,’ for implementation in the spring of 2022.

Council will revisit the issue at its next meeting.
