Councillor concerned about mule deer danger

A Vernon councillor has again expressed concern about a growing herd of mule deer in the East Hill neighborhood.
“I understand that they are becoming fairly aggressive, and I think we should probably do something, from some of the stories I have been hearing, before somebody gets hurt,” Coun. Scott Anderson said. “I would like to have staff bring back some ideas, as my understanding is that they are growing in numbers and aggressiveness.”
Vernon Chief Administrative Officer Will Pearce was with the City of Cranbrook when it went through the process of trying to control the deer population, including efforts to relocate and a cull.
“What happens with a cull program is it creates a void in the population which was quickly filled with other whitetail and mule deer,” Pearce told council. “It is a divisive program that has had little to no positive impact.”
