No city operated RV sani-station for 2021

Vernon council has voted not to have a recreational vehicle sani-station for 2021, after two staff-proposed locations were rejected.

A location approved for a frontage road on Okanagan Landing Road across from Ellison Elementary School, was strongly rejected by the public, and the plan was withdrawn in a council vote.

“Clearly the location we had contemplated last time was a non-starter,” Coun. Brian Quiring said.

A recommendation to move the station to Kin Park off 43rd Avenue across from Alexis Park School on a temporary basis, at a cost of $85,000, was also rejected.

Potential solutions include finding a business interested in having the sani-station or finding another public location. A motion to gather more information and put a decision off to the fall, passed 6-1 with Mayor Victor Cumming opposed.

“I’m uncomfortable with not having a sani-station. I think there will be significant regional travel,” Cumming said.

Despite the provincial travel restrictions, Cumming noted Interior Health is a large region, and Vernon is one of the focal points.

Some council members also took issue with the time frame they had to make a decision.

“Staff knew that the site would have to be changed, and potentially knew for 12 months. We only recently discovered that, and frankly, only had three days to make a very important decision on where that location should be,” Coun. Kari Gares said.

Detailed planning is underway for Civic Centre Park, which was the current location of the sani-station and it could be incorporated into that design.
