Armstrong council is getting close to finalizing a design and cost for a proposed new city hall.

The elected reps had four design options presented to them by MQN Architects of Vernon Monday evening (April 12).

“We have accepted option four as a council, and we gave final reading to the loan authorization bylaw,” Mayor Chris Pieper told Vernon Matters.

Pieper said the city will next proceed with final design, and will put the project out to tender in a few months.

“We’ll see where the budget comes in. We know that costs are escalating. If we can bring it in within our budget, we’ll probably go ahead. If we can’t bring it in within our budget, then it’s back to the drawing board,” the mayor stated.

Pieper said option four differs from the other three in exterior and roof design.

“The floor plan is the same in all of them,” he said.

The loan bylaw allows the city to borrow up to $4-million for the project which would replace the existing city hall building which is over 100 years old.

“We understand the environment we’re in, but this has been in the works for a long time — planning a new city hall — and we’re optimistic we can bring it in within our budget, the four million,” Pieper added.

The new building would be built on Pleasant Valley Road, across from the current city hall, on city-owned land which is currently a parking lot.
