Vandals damage new lights on Polson Park boardwalk

Apr 2, 2021 | 6:00 AM

The dust has barely settled on the new Polson Park Trail and Boardwalk project and the vandalism has already started.

The new trail was equiped with low level lighting so bikers and walkers could see where they were the edges of the board walk were located.

“Some time between Thursday and Friday of last week, approximately seven boardwalk lights along the newly renovated portion of the Polson Park boardwalk were vandalized. The lights were forcibly detached from the bridge structure and left hanging. One light was taken away from the site,” Christy Poirier, Manager, Communications and Grants told Vernon Matters.

The electrical contractor that was used to install the lighting along the path is going to be performing the repairs and some new lights will be ordered as necessary, after which time the lights will be up and running again.

“This is an unfortunate event, particularly after the significant upgrades that were made last year to improve this well-used active transportation route for cyclists and pedestrians through the park,” Poirier added.

Recently completed upgrades to the Polson Park Trail included:

  • Upgrading the existing trail surface from gravel to an asphalt multi-use path
  • Installation of street lights along the path
  • Installation of low-level lighting along the boardwalk
  • Addition of several wayfinding signs in and around Polson Park

RCMP are looking for any information on the vandalism.
