Batten down the hatches – Environment Canada warning

Mar 28, 2021 | 10:54 AM

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the North, Central and South Okanagan as a spring storm bears down on the region.

Following Saturday’s beautiful spring like weather, the change will be dramatic over the next 24 hours.

A storm system will bring strong winds to the southwest interior. Gusty southwesterly winds will continue throughout the day, with wind gusts reaching 60 to 70 km/h at times.

By late Sunday, a strong cold front will begin to move through the area and bring a blast of cold northwesterly winds. Wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h can be expected in some locations. Please refer to your local public forecast for more details.

Gusty northwesterly winds are likely to continue through to midday Monday before starting to ease.

The weather statement also includes the Okanagan Connector Highway – Merritt to Kelowna, which could experience the same blustery conditions combined with blowing snow.

Temperatures on Monday are only expected to reach 7 C, before returning to more seasonal weather.
