ALC asked for exemption for B.X. Creek flood mitigation

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is supporting a City of Vernon request to make a slight change to the boundary of B.X. Ranchlands Park to allow for the construction of a sedimentation pond.

Vernon is acting as agent to expand the area of the smallest of the two parcels from 0.11 ha to approximately 1.162 ha to accommodate the proposed sediment control pond.

The city has proposed to construct the pond in order to manage downstream sedimentation accumulation associated with B.X. Creek and to reduce the risk of flooding along the creek.

The properties are located within RDNO, with the Vernon boundary intersecting B.X. Creek approximately 1 km downstream of the subject properties.

Most of the land within the scope of the proposal is comprised of areas along B.X. Creek which have previously been used by a water utility and for water management. The additional land required for the sedimentation pond is proposed to be sourced from the BX Ranch Dog Park.

Other locations have been considered, but the city determined the proposed location provides the best chance of effectively achieving the intended purpose

The $1.19 million dollar project has already been approved for a $747,000 provincial emergency preparedness grant.

Pending approval from the land commission, it is hoped the work could still begin this spring.
