Coldstream Community Hall exterior design rejected

Details are being finalized for Coldstream’s new community centre, but the exterior building design is a cause for concern for Coldstream council.

“The design is reminiscent of some community halls you would see historically in smaller communities,” Mayor Jim Garlick commented at Monday’s council meeting.

Council was going over recommendations from the Community Centre Advisory Committee, including finalizing some details for the interior of the building which will be located on Kalamalka Road across from Coldstream Elementary School.

“I’m discouraged that it’s just going to look industrial, and I don’t think there has been any energy put into the look,” Coun. Richard Enns said. “I’m sorry but I think it looks like a dairy barn. This could be here for a long time; 50, 60 maybe 80 years. It looks like a warehouse.”

Enns wasn’t the only member of council that felt the exterior look could be improved.

“I kept expecting another rendition of the design. We got one drawing and that was it,” Coun. Glen Taylor added.

A motion to have the lead advisor and architect bring back alternatives for the exterior of the building, such that they don’t alter the interior specifications, was passed by council.
