One of the best-known businesses in the Vernon area has a new owner, and a new name.

Swan Lake Nurseryland Fruit Market and Garden Centre, which has been owned by the Kowaluk family for over 60 years, has been sold to Derrick Cooke of Salmon Arm.

The new name is similar, but a bit different: Swan Lake Market and Garden.

Cooke said he is taking over a business with a solid foundation, and they hope to take it even further.

“There was no hesitation to get involved upon being made aware of the opportunity with Swan Lake Nurseryland, as it really struck a chord with my agronomic upbringing and I am excited to bring my abilities to the table in serving our community,” said Cooke, who noted he grew up ranching in the Nicola Valley, gained experience in the Lower Mainland and has now moved his family to Salmon Arm.

Here is what the new branding looks like:

Cooke said most of the staff have chosen to remain with Swan Lake Market and Garden through the transition.

“And as such, many of the familiar faces will still be here for years to come and to help in this process of change. Colin Laidlaw has been a strategic addition to the team as incoming general manager, bringing fresh eyes and a world of retail experience serving remote communities across the globe as well as some of the biggest names in the industry.”

Cooke added they hope to echo the values of integrity and inclusivity of the founders, while continuing to deepen the value to their customers through high quality, local products.

“We have undertaken an extensive renovation inside the store that we feel will enhance our customer’s experience and showcase our increased commitment to specialty grocery and food services,” Cooke said.

Kirk Hughes, the store’s former manager and the son of founder Mike Kowaluk who passed away last month, said they are confident their reputation as the premier destination garden centre and market in the North Okanagan will carry forward.

“The new ownership team have a vision for the future that resonates with us and will excite our customers and continue to attract business from throughout the region and beyond. Most importantly we are confident that the great service and selection our customers have come to expect will continue,” Hughes told Vernon Matters.

Hughes said Swan Lake Nurseryland has been a landmark for generations of satisfied customers, having operated from the same location on Highway 97 since 1959.

“The Swan Lake family started business as a grower and seller of our own produce and have expanded to the diverse business that it is today. What is an ending for some of us is a new beginning for others, most importantly the new store is now Swan Lake Market and Garden,” he said.

Hughes added the major renovation inside the store is almost complete, and the business will be reopening soon.
