Bigger hammer for construction non compliance

Feb 28, 2021 | 8:00 AM

The City of Vernon is doubling the fee it charges when notice on title is put on a property.

The move is hoped to give building inspection another tool when dealing with building deficiencies.

Director of Community lnfrastructure & Development Kim Flick told council moving the fee from $500 to $1,000 may get the required action.

“A notice on title is implemented when a property owner will not complete required building permit components that may be a danger to life and safety. A notice on title is the final step in what is typically a long process to gain compliance,” Flick stated. “The new fee better reflects the amount of staff time that goes into the process.”

In many cases the notice on title stays on a property until it is sold, and deficiencies must be rectified prior to the sale completing.

Several other housekeeping items in bylaw #3909 covering fees and charges were also made.

Annual declaration and business license fees for secondary suites have been dropped as council tries to encourage applications for legal suites, as part of the housing strategy.
