The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) has approved a four-year agreement to try bolster the economies of some of the smaller communities in its region.

The new Shuswap Economic Development Society (SEDS) is comprised of 12 directors, who represent a wide variety of personal and professional backgrounds, and were appointed to staggered terms of between one-to-three years to provide stability and continuity to the organization.

The not-for-profit society will receive $130,000 funding for 2021 with a review annually during budget deliberations.

SEDS would serve the eastern most electoral areas C, D and F, including the communities of Anglemont, Seymour Arm, Sorrento and Falkland.

Area E director Rhona Martin voted against the establishment of the service. Area E includes the community of Malakwa and Sicamous.

Shuswap Economic Development had been administered and operated within the (CSRD), in conjunction with Shuswap Tourism. Tax rates will not change substantially, with the transfer of service.

A full-time economic development manager will be hired to manage the day-to-day activities of the society under the direction of its board.

Some experts feel smaller communities may be prime locations post COVID pandemic, as people look for a less crowded lifestyle.

The pandemic has also shown that physical location is less important than internet connectivity for many professions.
