Harwood temporary four way stop still temporary

A temporary four-way stop sign that was placed on 43 rd Avenue and 20 th Street in Sept. 2020, still has the temporary signage in place, despite direction from Vernon Council at the Oct. 12, 2020 meeting to make it permanent.

City of Vernon staff had previously brought a report to council that the upgrade of the intersection would cost $180,000, to match national road safety guidelines.

Council rejected spending that amount at it’s Nov. 9, 2020 council meeting.

“This looks like a poison pill. We went against administration’s recommendation (to remove the four-way stop),” Coun. Scott Anderson said. “It’s beyond me how we can set up a temporary four-way stop in ten minutes and now we need all these bells and whistles.”

The matter was on the council agenda for the Feb. 22 meeting but was withdrawn by staff.

“Some of the information in the report had to be confirmed prior to council consideration, we expect to see it back on the March 8 agenda,” Christy Poirier, Manager of Communications and Grants said.

There was a recommendation to reduce the scope of the project to $80,000 and restore funding to the bus shelter program of $100,000.

“I think the four-way stop is working fine the way it is, and we can refocus funds on upgrading some the transit shelters.” Coun. Akbal Mund told Vernon Matters.
