UPDATE Feb. 26

A fire in a shop building in the B.X. area of Greater Vernon Wednesday had an accidental cause, according to BX-Swan Lake Fire Chief Bill Wacey.

The final determination will be up to the insurance company that is also investigating the incident at 940 Pottery Road.

Wacey said the blaze in the quonset structure caused considerable damage.

“They had a truck with a whole bunch of equipment on it and that was totally destroyed. It’s a water works company — they do water testing — and they had a whole raft of equipment, so a lot of it is a total loss. They had just peeled a bunch of stuff off their trucks because they were getting them tested, so that was all unfortunately laying on the side there,” the veteran fire chief told Vernon Matters.

Wacey says the fuel load for the fire was from foam inserts used for cleaning pipes, which made it a “stubborn” fire to fight.

The location was just inside the BX-Swan Lake jurisdiction, close to the boundary with the City of Vernon.

Fire crews have knocked down a structure fire in the 900 block of Pottery Road.

The BX-Swan Lake Fire Department was called to the site near Hillview Elementary School around 11:37 a.m.

“There was a fire in a Quonset-type shop building. One service truck was in the building. There was no one inside at the time, everyone was out. Smoke was coming out of the building which was fairly badly damaged,” Kevin Rothwell of Vernon Matters reported from the scene.

There is no word on the cause.

Three BX-Swan Lake fire trucks and a water tender, with about 20 fire personnel are at the scene.

B.C. Ambulance, B.C. Hydro and RCMP are also on site with police providing traffic control.
