Vernon gas prices spiking

The cost of fueling up appears to be going up in Vernon.

Fuel prices were as low as $1.19.9 a litre for regular on Thursday (Feb. 18).

While several stations are at $1.25.9 today (Feb. 19), the Shell station at 3800-32 Street has its price up to $1.34.9.

The least expensive fill-up is in Enderby, where the GTI station at Sutherlands Bakery, is selling for 117.9, according to gasbuddy.com.

The extreme cold in the southern United States could have a ripple effect on Canadian gas prices.

“Eleven refineries in Texas and one in Kansas have at least partially shut due to the extremely cold weather,” GasBuddy analysis stated. “Calculations show 3.48 million barrels of refining capacity were offline as of midday Tuesday, or nearly 20 per cent of total U.S. refining capacity.

The production slow down comes as fuel demand is ramping up as the economy starts to recover from COVID-19.
