Judge awards beating victim nearly $7 million

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has awarded Jessie Simpson and his family nearly $7 million after the 2016 baseball bat beating in Kamloops that left the teen with severe, permanent injuries.

On June 19, 2016, Kristopher Teichrieb beat Jessie Simpson with a bat after finding the teen on his Brocklehurst property. Teichrieb was convicted criminally in the beating, and a civil trial in January found him liable for damages.

In a ruling published Thursday (Feb. 11), Justice Dev Dley awarded Simpson and his family $6.94 million.

The total is broken down as follows:

  • Non-Pecuniary damages: $393,000.00
  • Loss of Housekeeping capacity: $50,000.00
  • Loss of Income Earning capacity:
  • Past loss: $87,000.00
  • Future loss: $1,367,000.00
  • Cost of Future Care: $3,000,000.00
  • In Trust Claim: $75,000.00
  • Special Expenses: $42,689.35
  • In Trust for Ministry of Health: $1,488,265.83
  • In Trust for Crime Victim Assistance Program: $432,490.61
  • TOTAL: $6,935,445.79

Simpson’s injuries will result in him requiring 24-hour care for the rest of his life.

In making the award, Justice Dley accounted for Sue Simpson’s loss of earning capacity as she cares for her son, as well as the cost of the care itself.

Dley also added the cost of $1.5 million in healthcare expenses that Simpson can recover, as per the Health Care Costs Recovery Act of 2008.
