Consultation demanded on Rose Swanson Mountain logging

Feb 5, 2021 | 1:30 PM

Spallumcheen council is calling for an immediate halt to plans by B.C. Timber Sales to log four per cent of Rose Swanson Mountain, until ‘extensive consultation’ has taken place with stakeholders including the township.

A petition circulating on change.org is quickly approaching its 25,000 signature goal.

“The area is filled with trails for all, be it hikers, horseback riders, dog owners, and mountain bikers. There is an abundance of wildlife as well as natural water holes and small creeks. The forest scenery is magnificent. It is a truly magical place,” petition originator Cheri Saunders stated. “Please join me trying to save this wonderful land from being logged and destroyed.”

At the township’s Feb. 1, 2021 council meeting, a three-page letter to B.C. Timber Sales supported residents concerns and noted the importance of Rose Swanson Mountain as one of the most extensively used recreation areas in the Armstrong-Spallumcheen region.

“The township council will be requesting the minister suspend all timber sales related to this area and any plans, until extensive public consultation and communications for the area is established and identified, in terms of reference to ensure community consultation meets the objectives of township council, concerned citizens and the stakeholders,” Mayor Christine Fraser stated in the letter.

The communication also includes a copy of the Ray Crampton, District Manager, letter from Ministry of Forests Lands and Natural Resource Operations dated April 11, 2014 that advised the ministry will honor the sensitive area.
