Dog owners getting on board with new licence system

Jan 22, 2021 | 5:15 AM

The number of people getting their dogs licensed has ramped up after the holidays, with about 70 per cent of last year’s pets now registered.

Prior to the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) shutting down Dec. 24 for the Christmas break, just over 50 per cent of dogs were registered despite a Jan. 1, 2021 late fee.

“We have taken a number of steps in conjunction with DocuPet to make sure people know how they can get the licence,” Leah Mellott, general manager, electoral area administration RDNO, said.

Those measures include a flyer sent out in water bills, postcards at groomers, veterinarian offices and pet stores. There are plans for automated phone calls and a poster campaign.

Staff also reached out to a number of senior organizations, as that group was having some difficulty with the online and phone registration, including apprehension about paying remotely with a credit card.

In the past, licences could be renewed at pet stores, clinics and groomers.

The new proposed animal control bylaw may also spur people on to get their pet licensed.

“I think a $20 licence fee versus a $300 fine (up from current $100) might convince people to take action,” Mellott said.

“Pet sales are way up since COVID-19. Are we seeing new registrations?” Vernon Coun. Dalvir Nahal asked.

“I get a report every morning from DocuPet, and there are new dogs on there. I would say we will be well over 7,000 new licences this year compared to around 5,800 in 2020,” Mellot replied.
