The City of Armstrong is working on more detailed planning and designs for a proposed new city hall building.

Mayor Chris Pieper said council is waiting on detailed designs to get a more accurate budget figure before proceeding.

“Construction costs are changing daily — the price of lumber has more than doubled in the last few months — so we want to get a budget that we can live with. So were doing more planning, drawing and design work so we can get an accurate budget going forward,” Pieper told Vernon Matters.

Earlier estimates put the cost at around $4-million.

Pieper expects to have an update on the plan by late spring or early summer.

“We’re also looking at a couple of grant applications to help with the cost of city hall,” he said.

The mayor said everyone on council is still on board with the need for a new building.

“It’s a big investment for the city and it’s a long term one. Our current city hall is over 100 years old so these kind of investments are long term for our community, so we want to be sure to do it right.”
