Alexis Park Drive roundabout contemplated

Jan 5, 2021 | 2:35 PM

Public hearings scheduled for two developments in the Alexis Park Drive area has city staff musing about a future roundabout at the intersection with Turtle Mountain Boulevard.

A staff report indicates some land acquisition may be necessary to achieve a roundabout at that location.

“The subject properties are located at the northwest corner of Alexis Park Drive and Turtle Mountain Boulevard. Combined, they represent an important and prominent cluster of land in the Alexis Park neighbourhood,” Craig Broderick, the manager of current planning, said in the report. “Further, this intersection forms the entrance to the Turtle Mountain neighbourhood and to development lands beyond that area. As such, the development of this corner is of key importance to the overall area.”

While not all drivers are fans, traffic circles or roundabouts are being used increasingly as a safer and in many cases less expensive solution to traffic control.

Transport Canada indicates studies have shown roundabouts are safer than traditional stop sign or signal-controlled intersections.

According to a study by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), roundabouts typically achieve:

  • A 37 per cent reduction in overall collisions
  • A 75 per cent reduction in injury collisions
  • A 90 per cent reduction in fatality collisions
  • A 40 per cent reduction in pedestrian collisions

Public hearings are scheduled for January 11, on the amalgamation of three residential lots on the corner of Alexis Park Drive and Turtle Mountain Boulevard, and additional development on Turtle Mountain.
