Another spike in COVID-19 cases in Revelstoke

Jan 5, 2021 | 11:22 AM

The mountain town of Revelstoke is experiencing another jump in positive tests for COVID-19, and Interior Health (IH) indicates it is likely from community transmission of the virus.

IH said there is no specific source for the new cases.

“It is for this reason all residents and businesses are reminded of the importance of COVID-19 testing at the first sign of symptoms in addition to keeping social bubbles small,” a news release stated.

According to the weekly data released by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, the cumulative total of COVID-19 cases in the Revelstoke region has risen to more than 85. Last week, 22 new cases were confirmed and the week prior, there were seven new cases.

On a per capita basis, the weekly and cumulative totals are higher than many areas of the province. The town has an estimated population of 7,500.

The Revelstoke hospital only has 15 beds and two ventilators, causing concern about medical facilities being overwhelmed.

“I’m just going to encourage everyone to do what you are doing: mask up, physically distance and follow the protocols Bonnie Henry has put in,” Mayor Gary Sulz said in a video message on the town’s website.

Tourists have also been advised to obey the non-essential travel restrictions.

COVID-19 tests can be booked online at https://interiorhealthcovid.secureform.ca/index.php or by phone at 1-877-740-7747.
