New safety buoys get budget approval

It’s not a huge budget line in the city’s nearly $45-million dollar 2021 fiscal blueprint, but it is a big deal for the safety of swimmers at two Okanagan beaches.
Vernon council has approved budgeting $8,700 for enhanced buoy markers at Paddlewheel Park and Hurlburt Park beaches, with the remainder of the cost coming from reserve funds.
The issue arose over the summer after a boater nearly hit a young boy who was swimming off Hurlburt Beach.
City staff worked with Transport Canada and the Okanagan Landing Community Association to determine a solution.
