Trying to help small business

Click and collect pick-up locations approved downtown

Vernon council is moving to make it easier for residents to safely shop in the downtown by designating several pick-up locations for phone and online order pick-up from restaurants and retailers.

Small retailers have been hammered by COVID-19 restrictions, as people have leaned more toward online shopping, and large chain stores with curbside and designated pick-up stalls.

“I do a lot of charity events, and these are the businesses we go to for support,” Coun. Dalvir Nahal said. “We need to support our local businesses, or there are many that may not survive.”

Twelve locations on 30th Avenue from 29th Street to 35th Street will be designated, as soon as the signs are available, with two curbside pick-up locations per block, one on each side. The exact locations would be identified in consultation with the Downtown Vernon Association (DVA). A three month trial period would start December 1st.

“I like the idea, but how do we track abuse for people just using it as a free parking stall?” Coun. Kari Gares asked.

“There has been good buy-in in other locations that this has been tried. The vast majority of people will follow the rules,” Amanda Watson Transportation Manager said. “We won’t have bylaw officers stationed at the locations, but we ask the community to respect the intent of the bylaw.

The locations would consider parking volume, demand, and requests from businesses and be identified using temporary signage. lf the maximum of two per block were installed, permanent signage would cost an estimated $4,050. That would be funded from the anticipated unexpended balance within the approved 2020 sign budget.

Administration would continue to monitor their use and remove, modify, or redistribute the locations as necessary.
