City extinguishes involvement in regional fire training centre

Vernon council has passed three readings of a bylaw to cease involvement in the North Okanagan Fire Training Centre (NOFTC).

In declassified in-camera motion council revealed it had sought a legal opinion from Lidstone and Company to withdraw from the inter-municipal fire training function and cancellation of the lease at 300 Pottery Road with the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO).

“We can put these funds to more effective use,” Mayor Victor Cumming said.

The city’s remaining 2021 net balance of $22,000 will be redirected to ongoing development and maintenance of training areas. equipment and props.

The North Okanagan Fire Training Centre was established in 1991 to provide a training facility for the nine volunteer departments/associations established within the North Okanagan Region.

The centre was jointly funded by Vernon, Coldstream, Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby, Spallumcheen and RDNO.

It’s unclear if the centre can or will continue without City of Vernon support.
