Some trails are public

Public vs private Adventure Bay trails to be identified

City of Vernon administration has met with ownership of the Tavistock/Adventure Bay Properties over public concerns about the closure of hiking trails.

The closure created a firestorm on social media in September, and eventually the matter found its way to city hall, where council instructed staff to sort out the issue.

“I know that development is unavoidable but it saddens me that more and more of these precious places are being sold off to big developers and becoming “off limits” to the citizens of our community,” Julie Armitage lamented on Facebook.

There was a memorandum of understanding between the developer and the city when the development was first approved, allowing for public access to some trails.

A report to council indicates a map is being created to show the trails that are for use by the public.

Administration will then develop wayfinding signage to be posted on site.

The hiking trail closure signs posted this summer will then be relocated to the boundary between public and private trails.
