Trucks OK on 27th Street

Taking heavy trucks off 27th Street not a benefit

A suggestion by a Vernon councillor to try divert heavy truck traffic off 27th Street isn’t warranted according to a staff report coming before council.

At its meeting on Sept. 28, Coun. Akbal Mund inquired as to whether administration previously considered implementing a through truck traffic restriction on 27th Street to extend the road’s useful life cycle.

“The road is taking a pounding at taxpayers’ expense,” Mund said.

Administration indicates that this was considered as part of the development of the current master transportation plan (MTP).

An excerpt of that report states:

“To assess the impact that the through truck traffic has on the life cycle (the number of years before it requires maintenance) of 27th Street, the truck volume, vehicle size and type was assessed by a geotechnical engineer. The conclusion was that the removal of through truck traffic on 27 Street would not lead to any significant design life increases on 76 per cent of the length of this road. A section that is 24 per cent of the length of the route, from the city boundary to 48th Avenue, due to its current construction would see an increase on the life cycle of the road surface of one year up to a possible five years.

“Given the small benefit and the numerous disadvantages to the community, local business and commercial industry, a restriction on through truck traffic on 27th Street is not proposed.”

Staff note that work on a new official community plan and MTP, are scheduled to start in late 2022 and that a review might be in order at that time.
