New rink chiller could cost $200,000

The start of outdoor skating this winter at the Centennial rink could be delayed if the chiller that keeps the ice frozen needs to be replaced.

Vernon council approved up to $30,000 to do an X-ray investigation of the existing unit to determine if there is a problem.

“To carry out the investigation the insulation must be stripped off of the chiller. Once the testing is completed, and if nothing of concern is found, some cleaning and painting will be done and piping will be re-insulated,” reported Doug Ross, the city’s director of Recreation Services.

The life expectancy of the chiller is 20 years. The one currently in use has been in service for 22 years.

If there is a serious issue with the existing equipment the cost for a replacement would be in the $175,000 to $200,000 range.

“Due to the timing, it is unlikely that the replacement would be able to be completed in time for the start of the season in November,” Ross said.

The rink provides free public skating, parent and tot, shinny, ringette, girls hockey, winter carnival events and School District #22 usage.
