New group home to replace Howard House
Vernon City Council has approved a rezoning application requested by B.C. Housing and the Turning Points Collaborative Society (TPCS) to add a group home to the light industrial zone, as a replacement of the current Howard House.
The unanimous approval followed a public hearing Monday night, that saw no opposition registered by neighbors of the property at 2307-43rd Street.
The 2019 Point in Time Homeless Count counted 151 people without homes in Vernon. COVID-19 has highlighted the critical need to bring people inside. These new homes would help vulnerable people and provide a safe place for those who don’t have a home.
The proposal is to tear down the old empty Howard House building, redevelop and build 52 new units with 24-hour supports.
