Safety first this long week-end

Have fun, but be safe

It’s the last long weekend of summer, and with the forecast calling for temperatures in the 30s, it’s expected to be busy as locals and tourists get one last crack at the beach, boating, camping and other pursuits.

The Canada Day long weekend resulted in a COVID-19 outbreak in Kelowna as a result of crowded parties.

Since then, the province has implemented fines of $2000 for a party host and $300 for individuals not following the health guidelines.

No fines have been issued in the Vernon area.

“I’m encouraging people to enjoy the wonderful area we live in, but do it safely. We don’t want an outbreak,” said Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming.

The province says stick to people you know, avoid passing around drinks and stay outside.

“We can make this Labour Day holiday weekend one where we find the right balance: having those important social connections with our friends and family, while taking precautions to protect ourselves and those around us,” said Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Numbers released Thursday indicate an increasing number of younger people are contracting COVID-19, dropping the median age of victims from 50 to 41.

In addition to COVID-19 concerns, B.C. wildfire officials are warning campers and back country users to be extra careful as the warm weather continues to push the fire hazard upward, now sitting at moderate to high in the North Okanagan.
