Vernon shoppers have another choice for groceries as of today.

FreshCo has opened its store at the former Safeway site on 30th Avenue after a re-construction project that started last fall,

The store is owned and operated by local franchisee Sean Watson who leads a team of 118 employees.

“Sean and his team are working with partners to source locally at competitive prices for the Vernon community. Featured products include Underground Kombucha from Martens Brewing Company and produce from local farms across the region,” said a news release from parent company Sobeys.

“During this critical time, FreshCo is focused on providing the community with another option to shop, for the essential food and pharmacy necessities they require for their families,” the release added.

FreshCo is taking a number of measures to protect the health and safety of employees and customers during COVID-19.

Measures include introducing a senior shopping hour from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. daily, sanitizing carts and other high touch surfaces constantly during the day, teammates washing their hands every 15 minutes, limiting the number of people in stores, physical distancing markers on the floor, and ensuring employees have access to necessary personal protective equipment like gloves, masks, and protective shields for workstations.

FreshCo Vernon has also made a community donation of $2,500 to the Schubert Centre to support seniors in the community.
