In loving memory of my closest friend, confident, lover and husband of 40 plus years, Peter Erwin (EJ) Jansen, who passed away quietly at home on May 22, 2020.
Erwin, as he was known, was born in Monchengladbach, Germany on June 20, 1938, surviving war and poverty at a very early age. At the young age of 18, he immigrated to Canada by ship, arriving at the east coast in Nova Scotia and travelling by train to Vancouver, BC. There he learned English, learned to drive truck and worked in various jobs until he discovered the small coastal town of Ocean Falls that introduced him to the west coast sea and his love of boating.
Erwin married for the first time and had three children, living in various towns throughout BC. Returning later to Ocean Falls, working at the Pulp and Paper mill, he met his second wife and together travelled to Prince Rupert where he worked for the Coast Guard as a welder, fabricator; welding on navigational aids and traveling along the northern west coast and to various light stations. He also joined and trained as an officer for the Sea Cadets (Captain Cook’s), achieving his Captain’s bars and became the commanding officer for 3 years. After a brief stint in Whitehorse, Yukon, he and he wife came to Vernon in 1990, found work, bought a home and stayed for the remainder of his life. Although he worked in various maintenance and driving positions, he found his enjoyment driving truck and bus for the Vernon Camp during the summer months for 12 years.
Erwin leaves behind his loving wife, Pat, his daughters, Anita Bowen and Angelica Murray, his loving nephew Curran, his grandchildren, Ashley and Anna and his two great grandchildren.
