ICBC announces new glass and collision repair programs

Jan 20, 2020 | 12:40 PM

Following nearly $2 billion in loses over the past two years and a heap of public scrutiny, ICBC has announced new collision and glass repair programs aimed at saving costs and improving shop accountability.

ICBC says once the programs are implemented, shops will be ranked by performance and their ranking will be placed on a shop-locator on the ICBC webpage.

The insurance giant hopes this change will help consumers make more informed choices about where to take their vehicles for repairs.

“After consulting with industry leaders, the re-design of the collision and glass repair programs will improve transparency and accountability of repair shops for drivers who get into accidents and need to choose which repair shop they go to,” the province’s Attorney General David Eby said in a news release.

“By publicly ranking the repair shops by performance, where repair shops strive to be the top performers, we expect that this will help curb some of the rising claims costs and pressures that ICBC is facing,” he said.

The province says savings will come from improved performance and enhanced governance that drives higher efficiencies via faster processing of claims, faster repair cycle times and greater autonomy for high-performing suppliers.

About 1,000 collision and glass repair shops will be included in the program, however the province says the data won’t be made available to consumers until a ‘significant’ amount is collected.

The new collision program is slated to begin Feb. 3, 2020 with the glass repair program set to begin a month following on March 2, 2020.

The changes to the glass and collision repair programs come after government launched an operational audit of ICBC, which resulted in recommendations on ways to improve management of material damage vendors.
