Marianne & Leonard, September 30th

Okanagan Screen Arts Society is showing Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love at the Vernon Towne Cinema on September 30th.

This is an enlightening documentary by British filmmaker, Nick Broomfield who follows the life of Leonard Cohen, a Jewish Canadian pop singer who made such ’60s pop classics as “Suzanne,” “Marianne,” and the biggest-selling of all – “Hallelujah”.

The story begins on the Greek island of Hydra before Cohen had become famous. It gives us a vivid snapshot of the early 1960s and a complicated, mysterious love story between Marianne Ihlen, a beautiful Norweigan single mother, and the then struggling novelist, Leonard Cohen, in a period of time when Cohen was transitioning into a world-class songwriter.

The creative process and nature of the artistic spirit is explored in Broomfield’s riveting documentary as he examines this fascinating relationship during a time when Cohen was known to be going through women, money, alcohol and drugs, calling the women his muses. .

After Cohen’s novel failed in 1966, he moved to New York with Marianne. In New York, Cohen met Judy Collins, who heard his song, “Suzanne”, and wanted to record it immediately, which it was, and the rest is part of music history as he was signed to a Columbia recording contract. Despite being famous, Cohen still struggled with depression.

Though the pair were a hopelessly toxic match they were united by their love of words to the end with Marianne becoming the longest-standing muse in Cohen’s life.

Although Marianne leaves the relationship and moves on in her life, and Cohen gives up music for five years (returning to music in 2009 and going back on tour) and enters a Buddist monestary in his eternal quest for inner peace, the two remained friends for life until Marianne’s death of leukemia in July 2016 and Leonard’s death a few months later.

“Marianne & Leonard” is not easy to watch because it seems that Cohen never got what he wanted. To quote guitarist Ron Cornelius: “He lived in darkness. I’m not sure he knew what he wanted.”

There is emotional footage of Marianne listening to a tender message from Cohen that will leave you with a pleasant ache.

Showtimes at 5:15 & 7:45 p.m. Pre-show intro by Sally Evans, local entertainer.
