Vipers name assistant captains

The Vernon Vipers have filled out their leadership group for the coming B.C. Hockey League season, naming Landon Fuller, Trey Taylor and Ben Sanderson as assistant captains.

That follows the earlier announcement that third year forward Connor Marritt will be the captain.

Fuller is a 20-year-old Williams Lake product who is entering his fifth season of junior hockey. His career started in 2015-26 with the Sicamous Eagles and has also seen stops in Tri-City and Vancouver in the WHL and Salmon Arm, Surrey, Coquitlam, and Vernon in the BCHL. He has played 223 career junior hockey games.

“With Landon he has such a commanding presence,” Head Coach and GM Jason McKee said. “It resonates on the ice and in our dressing room.”

Seventeen-year-old Trey Taylor is from Richmond and is coming off an outstanding rookie campaign with the Vipers, playing in 74 games including the team’s run to the Fred Page Cup Finals where they lost to the Prince George Spruce Kings.

“Trey is a calming presence in the room and the experience he gained last season as a 16-year-old will continue to serve us as a group well and him as an individual,” McKee said. “Age is just a number and he’s a very mature young man.”

Nineteen-year-old Ben Sanderson joined the Vipers in late October and according to his coaches he made an immediate impact before an injury shortened his season, and he added 10 points in the playoffs.

“Ben is a lead by example type of player. He never takes a shift off and works hard in every regard of the game whether it’s on or off the ice,” McKee said.

The Vipers take on the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in back to back games, Wednesday in Salmon Arm, and Friday in Vernon.

The Snakes will play their first three regular season games on the road, starting in West Kelowna Sept. 6, with their home opener on Sept. 20 against the Victoria Grizzlies.
