City-union talks resume

Aug 27, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Neither side is saying much, but the City of Vernon and its unionized workers are talking again.

The City and Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 626, which represents about 240 city workers, first started negotiations on a new contract back in January.

The city’s Chief Administrative Officer Will Pearce issued this brief statement to Vernon Matters when asked about the talks:

““After a short break negotiations have resumed,” said Pearce in an email.

The previous five year deal expired at the end of 2018.

The workers got an 8.5 per cent wage hike over the term of the last deal.

Vernon Matters reached out to CUPE Local 626 for comment, with Bryce de Dood, acting president, saying they have no comment at this time, but they continue to meet and negotiate.
