Lake Country staff urge action on Airport Inn

The unsightly Airport Inn in Lake Country is back on the agenda for local politicians.

A report to be reviewed by Lake Country district council next Tuesday lists a series of options that could spell the end for the crumbling structure off of Highway 97.

An engineering report suggests the buildings on the property are in an unsafe condition and contravene the building code.

“The Airport Inn Lakeside, located at 11474 Petrie Road, has a lengthy history of non-compliance with the district’s bylaws as well as the BC Building Code,” states the report. “Despite numerous efforts over the past years to bring the property into compliance, the property remains a concern with respect to the building code, the building bylaw, and RCMP.”

Staff are recommending council demand remedial action from the owner to ensure the property is vacated, all the entrances are boarded up and a 1.8-metre high fence is erected around all of the motel buildings.

To do that, staff say council could declare the site a nuisance and the buildings “dangerous to the health, safety and welfare of the general public.”

“Numerous attempts to bring the property into compliance have been unsuccessful to date, and so the remedial action requirement, at the owner’s expense, will be a method of reducing public exposure to the potential health and safety risks posed by the non-compliant structures,” the report states.
