Kelowna man arrested after stolen vehicle crash

Aug 14, 2019 | 3:52 PM

A 25-year-old Kelowna man is in custody following a stolen vehicle pursuit that resulted in the use of police helicopters and the Police Service Dog to catch the suspect.

The RCMP received a report of the incident at approximately 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and tried to stop the stolen Chevrolet Malibu which headed toward downtown West Kelowna near Elliot Road.

“Due to concerns of public and police safety, officers called off the pursuit of the stolen sedan, which was being driven in a dangerous manner,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, a spokesperson for the Kelowna Regional RCMP, said.

A police helicopter and fixed winged aircraft circled above the city to catch a glimpse of the suspect, while police dogs took to the ground for the search.

“A short time later, police located their suspect vehicle, which had been involved in a collision with an electrical transformer at the north end of Carrington Road,” O’Donaghey said.

The crash sparked a fire which was put out by the West Kelowna Fire Department.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2208 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers.
