Crime up in Enderby, stats show

Criminal activity in Enderby rocketed up in the second quarter of 2019, with calls to the RCMP almost doubling in June.

Statistics show RCMP worked on 191 files that month, compared to 103 the same month last year.

Files included three robberies, nine thefts from vehicles and 17 thefts over $5,000.

In May, officers had 109 new files compared to 72 in May 2018.

April actually saw the reverse, with just 68 new files compared to 76 at the same time a year earlier.

Enderby’s Mayor Greg McCune said councillors are pleased to see more residents have been calling the RCMP to report criminal activity over the past few months.

“People are now starting to phone the RCMP instead of jumping on social media to report it to their neighbours,” McCune told Vernon Matters. “There are more calls coming in and that’s what we’ve been encouraging people to do forever.”

In July, Enderby city council green-lit a plan to use private security to patrol areas for at least 20 hours per week during the summer, concentrating on riverside parks and other open spaces.
