UPDATE: Special air quality statement for smoke in South Okanagan

Aug 12, 2019 | 10:06 AM

UPDATE:

Environment Canada has rescinded a special air quality statement for much of southeastern B.C.

However the smoky skies bulletin remained in place for the South Okanagan, including Penticton.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement on Monday for the whole of the Okanagan Valley due to wildfires in B.C. and Washington State.

The smoky skies bulletin was expanded to include the entire southeastern interior of B.C.

The experts said it is not clear how much of the smoke is from the Eagle Bluff fire near Oliver, but smoke transport models indicated that smoke from fires in Washington state is moving into B.C.

People with pre-existing health conditions, the elderly, pregnant women and infants, children and sensitive individuals are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.
