Aug 12, 2019 | 9:24 AM

UPDATE:

A 29-year-old local man was killed in Lavington on the weekend after crashing a dirt bike late at night.

The man was not wearing a helmet, police said.

RCMP reported a member of the public found the body of a man on the side of the road near the intersection of Park Lane and Springfield Road early Saturday morning.

A damaged dirt bike was beside him.

Police officers were called to the scene around 9 a.m. where they found the deceased male lying partly in the bushes.

An RCMP statement said the man was likely travelling on Springfield Road when he lost control of the dirt bike and slid off the road striking his head.

“From evidence at the scene, it appears the incident may have occurred the previous evening around 11 p.m.” Cpl. Tania Finn, a media relations officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said. “The man lived in the area and the dirt bike did not have a headlight for nighttime operation.”

Finn said the BC Coroners Service and the RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the incident to determine if speed or alcohol were factors.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Const. Sean Stevenson of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at (250) 545-7171.
