Public hearing to discuss regulations around septic tanks in Coldstream

Apr 10, 2026 | 3:03 PM

Coldstream is holding a special meeting to inform the public about newly-proposed regulations around septic tanks.

The municipality had proposed extending the setback for large septic facilities located near watercourses to a distance of 70 metres.

However, Greater Vernon Water reviewed the proposed change, and had instead recommended the setback be 150 metres to best ensure the drinking water sources are protected and to bring Coldstream into alignment with the Municipal Wastewater Regulation for setbacks of systems within the Okanagan Basin.

“Based on recent studies, nutrients are increasing in Coldstream Creek, impacting drinking water, beach water quality and kokanee spawning habitat,” a Coldstream staff report stated.

“The additional setback would assist in protecting the local water sources from contamination. Where a developer wished to locate closer, they could apply for a variance and present proof, to the satisfaction of GVW and the District of Coldstream, that their proposed design poses no risk to the water supply. This would put the onus on developers to design and prove systems that are suitable for conditions.”

Coldstream will hold a Public Hearing to inform the public about the proposed changes and gather input from residents.

The public hearing will be held at the Coldstream Municipal Hall at 6 p.m. Monday, April 13.
