Vernon RCMP urges people to “lock out auto crime”

Apr 9, 2026 | 3:02 PM

Local police have asked the public to do their part to reduce crimes of opportunity in Vernon.

April is Auto Crime Prevention Month, and Vernon North Okanagan RCMP have urged people to take steps to ensure their property is not stolen from vehicles.

  • Ensure vehicles are locked and not running when parked or left unattended
  • Park in well-lit areas where the vehicle can be easily seen
  • Do not leave valuables inside a vehicle, including personal items or garage door openers
  • Equip vehicles with an immobilizer or other theft-prevention device
  • Keep your keys with you at all times
  • Do not leave spare keys inside the vehicle

“Many auto crimes happen simply because an opportunity presents itself,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, stated.

“When a vehicle is left unlocked or valuables are visible inside, it increases the likelihood it will be targeted. Taking a few seconds to secure your vehicle can make a significant difference.”

Local Mounties do run a series of auto crime prevention programs, including a Bait Car program, the 9PMRoutine educational campaign, and the Lock-Out Auto Crime program, stating these efforts are most effective when coupled with public awareness and prevention.

Despite these efforts, auto crime has been an issue in Vernon. In 2025, police responded to more than 550 reports of property being stolen from vehicles, as well as over 250 cases of vehicle thefts.

More information about vehicle crime prevention and other safety tips can be found at the ICBC website or through IMPACT.

“Auto crime affects more than just the individual victim,” Terleski added.

“When residents take steps to protect their vehicles, it helps improve safety and security throughout the entire community.”
