Smoke billowed over Okanagan Lake after a fire broke out in a gated community Thursday afternoon.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services received a report of a grass fire at the Cameron Point community off Delcliffe Road, south of Hurlburt Park, at around 2 p.m. April 2.

“Upon arrival crews found a fire that had started on the outside and had entered into the structure,” Alan Hofsink, VFRS’s Deputy Fire Chief, told Vernon Matters.

“[Firefighters] knocked the fire down on the outside and then they made entry into the building and extinguished the fire.”

Hofsink said the fire caused significant damage to the house.

“The fire sadly did get into the actual structure quite significantly,” Hofsink explained.

“Just due to the nature of the construction it travelled throughout the structure. Our crews are now in salvage and overhaul mode.”

The cause of the grass fire was still being investigated as of Thursday afternoon.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. Emergency Support Services had been tasked with providing assistance to the residents.

VFRS initially responded with two crews, but backup was called in once firefighters were on the scene so as to have extra assistance in battling the blaze.
