Students in the Central Okanagan are set to benefit from $9.4 million in federal funding awarded to the YMCA of Southern Interior BC to expand programs that support learning and well-being.

The funding comes through the Government of Canada’s Support for Student Learning program and will strengthen the YMCA’s Youth Education Supports Program (YESP).

The program offers a combination of academic tutoring, one-on-one mentorship, life skills workshops, and access to essential resources such as healthy meals, school supplies, and technology for remote learning.

Officials say the initiative is designed to help students stay engaged in school, manage stress, and prepare for post-secondary education and future careers. “This investment gives thousands of local youth the tools and guidance they need to overcome barriers and reach their full potential,” said a YMCA spokesperson.

With this funding, YESP plans to expand services to reach more students across Kelowna, West Kelowna, and surrounding communities, including those facing socio-economic challenges or limited access to educational resources.
