Rail Trail construction adjusted to accommodate bald eagles

Mar 30, 2026 | 12:17 PM

Construction of the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail has been modified to accommodate a pair of bald eagles nesting in the area.

The birds, who mate for life, have established nests along the trail near Farmers Bridge.

The Yucwmenlúcwu Environmental Planning & Management Division was tasked with monitoring the birds and ensuring that ongoing construction was modified so that use of heavy machinery, such as excavators, do not disturb the eagles and force them to abandon their nests.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that development and environmental protection go hand in hand,” Herb Tepper, RPBio, Environment Manager with Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) LLP, stated.

“By closely monitoring the eagles during construction, we can help safeguard their nesting area while allowing important community infrastructure work to continue responsibly.”

The new trail being built will establish a multi-use path connection stretching 50 kilometres from Armstrong to Sicamous, and will be connected to the Okanagan Rail Trail that runs from Vernon all the way south to Osoyoos.
