Municipal backing awarded for Vernon’s new youth mental health hub

Foundry North Okanagan is getting some money back from the city.

The new youth mental health hub, which will be run by the Vernon and District branch of Canadian Mental Health Association was ineligible for tax exemption during construction.

In light of this, CMHA Vernon requested the city provide the agency with a $25,000 property tax exemption for the facility annually.

At the regular meeting Monday, March 23, Vernon City Council agreed to provide CMHA Vernon with $25,000 in compensation for that purpose.

The funds would be provided through the Prior Year Unexpended Uncommitted Reserve, and city staff were directed to amend the 2026-2030 Financial Plan to account for this grant.

CMHA Vernon had also requested that council provide a $100,000 gift to their Open the Door fundraising campaign, and to waive roughly $60,000 in fees for building permits, but decisions on those requests weren’t made at Monday’s meeting.

Construction of Foundry North Okanagan was expected to begin in the spring of 2026.
